John commenced his career with horses at the age of 14 when he began working for, and later became apprentice to, legendary Caulfield trainer Angus Armanasco. During his time with Angus, John was associated with stable stars Zeditave, True Version, Alannon and Tennessee Vain.
He also rode work for many leading trainers and has ridden outstanding gallopers such as Dr. Grace, Myocard, Danewin, Miss Pennymoney,Mouawad and Weekend Hussler during their preparations.
John began training in 1994, taking up stables at Caulfield Racecourse, where he still trains with his brother and Assistant Trainer, Frank Salanitri.
John met with immediate success as a trainer, preparing the talented sprinter Albert Park to win 9 races. The winners kept on coming after Albert Park and from a small team and with bargain-basement horses, John has built an impressive list of winners including three stakes-winners, headed by star two-year-old and Blue Diamond Stakes winner Road To Success.
In the 2000 season, one which included John's first Group 1 success, and with a team of just 10 horses, he finished 3rd in the Fred Hoysted Award for training excellence behind Bart Cummings and David Hall.
This was truly a fantastic result and an indication of John's standing within the racing community. John Salanitri is acknowledged by the industry as one of the best young trainers in Australia. His record shows that he is an excellent judge of a young horse and a very talented horseman, who knows how to rate and condition his horses. John has also proven he is a versatile trainer, just as adept in preparing two-year-olds as he is at preparing horses for the Classics and staying races.
John brings that ‘hands-on’ experience to his own stable at Caulfield. He regularly rides his own track work, allowing him the undeniable benefit to make first hand assessments of his horses.
