SPYDER LANDS THE PRIZE
Jan 15, 2014
The stable enjoyed a welcome return to the winner's circle in town with Red
Spyder producing a great first up effort to win the Cable Beach Club Resort
& Spa Handicap (1200m) at Caulfield.
After settling mid field, the three year old finished all over the top of
his opposition under Stephen Baster, to beat Silent Man and Honey Pie.
Red Spyder hadn't started since July, when he finished down the track in
slow conditions at Echuca.
But it was his debut effort at Werribee prior to that which gave an
indication of his true ability. He finished second to Peter Moody's smart
filly Rowdy Belle & beat home Lord Of The Sky a very Promising 3yo set for bigger things in the Autum, and has clearly come back an even better horse after a good break.
Red Spyder is John's first city winner since Bitola won at Sandown back in
June and was also a great result for the stable's long time supporter and
owner Eddie Hirsch.
The win also continued the stable's outstanding run in the first half of
this season - of the top 50 trainers in Victoria, John's winning strike
rate currently places him in the top five.
